The exhibit, “Black Excellence: Art by Melvin Lee Smith,” will be on display at the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) in Atlantic City.

Mr. Smith has previously exhibited selections of his work in group shows at the Museum, however, this show will mark his first solo exhibit. The self-taught painter developed an early interest in art after receiving encouragement from his high school art teacher. His youthful dream of becoming an artist was interrupted when he quit school to go to work. Smith is now returning to the arts with a series of paintings that represent his theme of black excellence.

This exhibit lets us revisit significant moments in African American history and culture through the eyes of the artist. In this, Smith’s first solo exhibit, he presents a group of new paintings with a selection from his older work.

"Black Excellence" will be on display from May 4 to June 30, 2023 at AAHMSNJ in the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University (2200 Fairmount Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ).

Atlantic City Museum hours are Wednesday-Saturday 11 AM to 6 PM; Sunday 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  Admission is free. Donations are encouraged.
