Portrait of Late AAHMSNJ Board Member & Curator Anne Glapion Unveiled

Late curator, Board member and long-time supporter Anne Glapion’s sudden passing reverberated through the African American Heritage Museum of South New Jersey community and beyond. The artist’s reception for the final exhibit she started to work on and promote, “Jersey Gents,” was the site for a touching unveiling of a portrait painted in her honor.

Anne’s family was invited to the exhibit’s opening reception on October 5th, 2024 where, unbeknownst to them, there was a special part of the program dedicated to the beloved wife and mother.

The portrait was painted by professor Dr. Richmond Garrick and prints were made by Todd Johnson. These two artists, whose work is featured in the Jersey Gents exhibit, were central to the creation and reproduction of a portrait in her honor.

Dr. Garrick and Museum Founder and President Ralph Hunter unveiled the portrait and gifted the original painting to the family. Many spoke fondly of the contributions of Anne Glapion who curated and promoted exhibits for the AAHMSNJ locations in Newtonville and Atlantic City at the Noyes Art Garage. Prints of Anne’s portrait will be on display in both museums.

The Jersey Gents exhibit, featuring 16 African American male artists who represent a range of cultural and professional backgrounds, is on display through December 27th, 2024 at the Newtonville location. Museum hours are Monday-Friday 10 AM – 3 PM and weekends by appointment.

Special thanks to Ruben Garcia for capturing the unveiling with photos.
