The African American Heritage Museum of South New Jersey will present a new exhibit featuring portrait quilts and dolls from Philadelphia-based Sankofa Artisans Guild and other quilting collectives in the region. “In Our Image: Crafting Black Heritage and Culture Through Quilts and Mixed Media,” will be on view from until March 29th at the Newtonville museum located at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 661 Jackson Rd, Newtonville, NJ.
There will be over 20 quilts and a dozen handmade dolls on display throughout both Black History Month and Women’s History Month. The collection of portrait quilts and handmade dolls depict the artists as well as relatives and historical figures. The show is curated by Gloria Davis, Cassandra Gunkel, Tiye Carter, Nzinga Brenda Shields, Venetta Robinson, Asake Denise Jones, and Doreen Mollette Sullivan. This unique exhibit connects the quilts on display with a larger legacy of African-American women quilters who participate in collectives as a source of community, healing and empowerment.
The Sankofa Artisans Guild was established in Philadelphia, PA by a diverse group interested in sharing their love of the arts. They and their affiliated artisans from the Delaware Valley pride themselves in maintaining a supportive environment where artists can learn and grow. The artisans are a multigenerational group of African-American women who meet regularly to share their artwork, and add new creative practices to their repertoire through demonstrations, workshops, and special events.
Newtonville museum hours are Monday-Friday 10 AM – 4 PM or weekends by appointment.
