Born in Somerville, New Jersey, Leslie Floyd discovered his passion for art at an early age and went on to earn recognition through the National Scholastic Art Awards, representing New Jersey among the nation's top young artists. He studied with artist Maurice Fern and continued his education at Montclair State College and the duCret School of Art. By the early 1970’s, his work was exhibited throughout New Jersey and beyond, including at Yale University.
Working in watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, and other media, Floyd is known for his realistic style with subtle impressionistic influences and for his dedication to mentoring young artists. He continues to create from his Somerville studio, where he draws inspiration from stories and images that move him.
The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the history and culture of African Americans in the region. Through exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach, the museum highlights the achievements and contributions of African Americans in South Jersey and beyond.
