A reception for AAHMSNJ's newest exhibit will take place on Friday, January 14 from 5 to 8 PM in the museum at 2200 Fairmount Avenue in Atlantic City. The reception is part of the Noyes Arts Garage's Second Friday event.

The exhibit featuring Memorial Quilt Project and Paintings by Melvin Irons explores the contemporary history of African American people through an artistic lens. It will be on view from January 4 to February 27, 2022 at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University.

Melvin Irons' exhibit depicts events preceding the 1985 bombing of a communal West Philadelphia rowhome occupied by the MOVE organization. The unprecedented action resulted in the death of 6 adults and 5 children in the fire.  Irons, who  lived in the area at the time, reflected on his view of the conflict between police and MOVE members in a series of ten paintings.

Irons will be on hand at the reception to sign prints of his paintings.

Two quilts on loan to the AAHMSNJ from the Stitch Their Names Memorial Project bring attention to black lives cut short as a result of racism, police violence and hate crimes. The Stitch Their Names Memorial Project is a group of cross-stitchers and quilters across the country (and beyond) who seek to honor the legacy of Black individuals for whom racism and hate have led to their deaths.

While visiting the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University visitors are asked to wear masks to protect against the Covid 19 virus.
