The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) will present “Black Lives Matter,” a virtual tour of the exhibit currently on view in the museum Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM.  Learn about the newest exhibit from local artists who’ve captured the moment for posterity. This FREE online event will also showcase the historical significance of selected items from the museum’s permanent collection.

AAHMSNJ President & Founder Ralph Hunter, Sr.

The “Black Lives Matter” exhibit features sculpture, paintings, photographs, correspondence, and scenes of protest related to resistance past and present.  Lavett Ballard’s sculpture of a defiant Aunt Jemima sets a tone of protest that echoes the turbulence of the times. Artists Richmond Garrick, John Morris, Jose Perez, Kelley Prevard, and Melvin Lee Smith capture the history of African American protest on canvas. Photographs of John Lewis and portraits of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd share the gallery with images of Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass.

Museum Founder and President Ralph Hunter never tires of sharing the stories of the thousands of artifacts housed in the museum’s collection. This virtual event is an opportunity to reconnect with AAHSMNJ’s community of friends and supporters. Although we have re-opened on a limited basis, this virtual tour will allow us to share these timely exhibits during a time of increasing relevance.

Since closing due to COVID-19, AAHMSNJ has not been able to generate the donation revenue that regularly results from visitors being moved by what they experience.

AAHMSNJ depends on donations to fund programming and daily operations and encourages virtual event attendees and others who appreciate the importance of the museum to make a donation at aahmsnj.org/BlackMuseumsMatter.
