A collection of paintings by late Atlantic City native Wayne Manns is the newest exhibit at the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey in Atlantic City. The paintings in the exhibit, entitled “AC Tribute to Wayne Manns,” are on loan from collectors throughout the East Coast. The collection will be on display now through July 28th at AAHMSNJ's Atlantic City location.
Manns was born and raised in Atlantic City, and his works have been shown around the world, but this is the first solo exhibit in his hometown. The artist’s sister, Paula Manns, helped curate this show which features art from collectors Michael Everette and Kathy Whitemore, Kim and Kelsey Jackson, Paula Manns, Angel Miller, Eddie Morgan, Monique and Tai Mutee, Elaine Scott, and G. Bruce Ward.
Originally from Atlantic City, Manns called Mexico, California and Indiana home before settling in New Orleans where he passed away in 2021. Raised in a musical household, Manns’ father was a classically trained musician and introduced his son to jazz. Manns, himself, was classically trained on the piano but always preferred jazz. This would greatly influence his painting style. During his time in California, an acquaintance noticed Manns’ penchant for sketching and encouraged him to pursue visual arts seriously. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the U.S., Europe and South America.
