Executive Director
Salary: $65,000–$75,000 annually, commensurate with experience
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports To: Board of Directors
Works Closely With: Founding CEO
The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSNJ) seeks a dynamic and collaborative nonprofit leader to serve as its first Executive Director.
The Executive Director will provide day-to-day leadership for the museum and help build the organizational and financial foundation needed for its next chapter. Working closely with the Board of Directors, Founding CEO, staff, donors, community partners, and other stakeholders, the Executive Director will strengthen operations, expand fundraising, build partnerships, and advance the museum’s mission and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership
- Lead day-to-day museum operations and administration.
- Establish effective systems, policies, and procedures.
- Implement strategic priorities and develop measurable organizational goals.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and mission-driven workplace.
Fundraising & Financial Management
- Manage the annual operating budget and monitor financial performance.
- Lead grant development and fundraising initiatives.
- Cultivate and steward individual donors and other supporters.
- Build relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, and funding partners.
- Develop new revenue opportunities.
People & Board Leadership
- Recruit, supervise, and support staff.
- Build a strong and effective organizational culture.
- Serve as the primary administrative liaison to the Board of Directors.
- Support Board meetings, committees, governance, and strategic priorities.
Community & Partnerships
- Represent AAHMSNJ with donors, funders, civic leaders, schools, community organizations, and cultural institutions.
- Expand the museum’s visibility, partnerships, and community engagement.
- Participate in public events, presentations, donor meetings, and other external activities.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated nonprofit leadership or senior management experience.
- Experience managing staff, budgets, and organizational operations.
- Experience with fundraising, grants, donor cultivation, and financial management.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to build relationships and establish trust with diverse stakeholders.
- A collaborative leadership style and the ability to work effectively with a Board of Directors and senior leadership.
- A strong commitment to the preservation and celebration of African American history and culture.
Experience with a museum, cultural institution, community-based nonprofit, or founder-led organization is preferred.
First Two-Year Priorities
The Executive Director will be expected to:
- Strengthen the museum’s organizational, financial, and operational foundation.
- Develop measurable annual organizational and fundraising goals.
- Increase contributed revenue through grants, individual giving, corporate support, and other sources.
- Strengthen staffing, governance, and organizational systems.
- Expand community, institutional, and funding partnerships.
- Support the museum’s exhibitions, programs, and mission.
- Build a sustainable foundation for the museum’s continued growth and impact.
